Parkland Victim’s Family On Hand for ‘Red Flag’ Bill Signing

Gov. Cuomo signed a “red flag” bill Monday that allows for confiscation of guns from people determined by courts to be an extreme risk to themselves or others.

Linda Beigel Schulman and her husband, Michael Schulman, of Dix Hills attended the signing ceremony in memory of son Scott Beigel, who was killed last year in the Parkland school shootings. She has been a tireless advocate for gun control.

Cuomo was joined at a signing ceremony for the red flag bill by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

On Facebook, Michael Schulman wrote, “Linda Schulman I can not find the words to express how proud I am of you. Thank you Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Speaker Nancy Pelosi for letting us be part of such a momentous and historical day To my son Scott—your murder is now saving lives.”

The Extreme Risk Protection Order bill was part of a sweeping packing of gun reform legislation passed last month. It included banning the bump stock, expanded background checks, extreme risk protection orders, and additional reforms.

Senator Jim Gaughran said, “Last year young people across the country mobilized in a transformative movement to march for their lives. One year later New York has made history by passing common sense gun reforms such as Extreme Risk Protection Order. I was honored to have had the honor of hosting Linda Beigel Schulman and Michael Schulman in Albany during the Senate’s vote for this bill.  I thank them for their tremendous bravery and courage in turning their tragedy into advocacy. It shouldn’t take a tragedy to spur action. Never again.”
