Halesite Fire Department Collecting Food Donations

The Ladies Auxiliary of the Halesite Fire Department is once again collecting donations of canned food, nonperishables and toiletries to help support the Family Service League.

Donations will be accepted at the firehouse, 1 North New York Ave., Halesite, until Dec. 21. A drop box for donations is located in the front lobby near where you walk inside.

The Family Service League on Park Avenue in Huntington has been helping the less fortunate of Long Island for more than 85 years. It accepts donations year-round and redistributes items to families in need in the  Huntington community.

“It’s hard to imagine that an affluent area like ours would have families that need help, but 1 in 4 adults on Long Island are ‘food insecure’,” said Greg Colonna, Halesite chief. “This means they are regularly choosing between paying bills or buying food for their families. In the Huntington area there are more than 3,000 families who receive the benefits of donated food from the Family Service League. These are often hard-working adults, children, and seniors who simply cannot make ends meet and are forced to go without food for several meals, or even days.”
