Hawk Hit by Vehicle on Dix Hills Road

A red-tailed hawk was injured Monday night by a hit-and-run driver on Dix Hills Road in Huntington Station.

One man who saw the bird get hit said it had been standing in the southbound lane of the road when it was struck and the driver drove off.

Several passersby stopped to protect the bird, but when a rescuer tried to pick it up in  a box, it flew into the branches of a tree on the TD Bank lot. A wildlife rescuer said the bird’s eye appeared injured. The bird was mobbed by numerous bluejays who dived on it while it sitting in the tree, trying to protect itself from the attacks.

The rescuer said she expected to stay to make sure the bird was able to maneuver on its own.
