Health Notes: Diabetes Classes; Flu Season Not Over

DIABETES CLASSES: Residents who are at risk for developing type-2 diabetes to participate, free of charge, in the Suffolk County- administered National Diabetes Prevention Program. The program supports moderate behavior changes and has proven to reduce risk in those who are at risk for type 2 diabetes.

DPP is based on a research study led by the National Institutes of Health. The study showed that with intensive counseling and motivational support, participants were able to make behavioral changes, reducing their risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes by 58 percent. Lifestyle changes worked particularly well for participants aged 60 and older, reducing their risk by 71 percent.

The Diabetes Prevention Program is led by a trained lifestyle coach. It meets one hour per week for 16 weeks, then monthly for the remainder of one year.

FLU HANGING ON:The flu season is hanging on but new cases could continue until May, the CDC reports. Some flu virus is still circulating. Earlier in the season season, influenza A viruses were causing most of the cases, while now the B type of virus is predominating.

HEALTH FAIR: Legislator William “Doc” Spencer is hosting his annual Community Health & Information Fair on May 16, celebrating National Women’s Health Week.

Representatives from more than 30 agencies will provide vital information to people of all ages about issues related to health, including diabetes prevention and substance abuse, fire safety, legal matters, child care, veteran affairs, senior outreach, independent living and much more. Bring your expired medications to dispose of through the Suffolk County Sheriff’s “Shed the Meds” program.  The fair runs from 11:30 a.m.-5 p.m., at the Harborfields Public Library.
