Healthcare News: New Cancer Center Director

Dr. David Rivadeneira, who has led surgical services and colorectal surgery at Huntington Hospital for the last seven years, has been appointed director of the Northwell Health Cancer Institute at Huntington. 

The institute is part of the primary Northwell Health Cancer Center.  

  Rivadeneira and his wife, Anabela Rivadeneira, who live in Lloyd Harbor, established a surgical scholarship in 2016 at Howard University School of Medicine. The scholarship gives preference to students with a Hispanic or Latino background in the third or fourth year of medical school with the intention of entering a surgical career. In addition, they and their two daughters are active in several Huntington area-based nonprofits, including Helping Hand Rescue Mission, a food pantry where they volunteer each week; and North Shore Holiday House, a group that provides summer camp opportunities to young girls from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Dolan Center Distributes Gift Cards

The Dolan Family Health Center has distributed 40 Stop & Shop gift cards for $50 each that were donated by St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in East Northport. The cards went to patient families who have been financially affected  by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are very grateful for the thoughtful donation from St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and glad that vulnerable families in our community will benefit from their meaningful generosity,” said Joseph Volavka, PT, MBA, senior administrative director of the Northwell Health practice.

Director of Surgical Oncology 

Martin Karpeh, Jr., MD, has been named director of surgical oncology for Northwell’s eastern region and chair of the department of surgery at Huntington Hospital. Karpeh specializes in the surgical management of gastrointestinal cancers. Overseeing surgical oncology for Northwell’s Eastern Region on Long Island, he will direct programs at Huntington Hospital, Southside Hospital in Bay Shore and Peconic Bay Medical Center. Karpeh joined Northwell in April. Karpeh previously worked at Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey where he was surgeon-in-chief from 2014-2019. He also was founding chair of surgery at the Hackensack Meridian school of Medicine at Seton Hall.

Jericho High School students, led by Khushie Shelat, organized a donation of lunches for Huntington Hospital emergency department staff.The meals were presented Thursday.State Sen.James Gaughran presented a proclamation.
