Hearing on Basement Apartments Postponed

A public hearing on allowing basement apartments in Huntington has been temporarily adjourned from the Town Board agenda in January.

Council members Dr. Dave Bennardo, Sal Ferro and Joan Cergol support a hearing on a  measure that would legalize basement apartments in owner-occupied homes, and establish communication with emergency services personnel about their location.

All three said they wanted more time to continue to find ways to improve safety, including a provision that would notify departments when the town approves basement apartments.

In 2019, the board banned new basement apartments though existing units were allowed to remain in place. The move was one of several changes to the code at the time.
