Heat Wave Expected to Continue Through Wednesday

Dangerous heat will continue throughout the day and into Wednesday evening in the tri-state area, the National Weather Service said Monday.

Numerous agencies issued warnings to take care of pets, avoid working outside if possible, and protect the vulnerable. The NWS put the heat index values, which are a measure of how hot it really feels when relative humidity is factored with the actual air temperature, as high as 103.

Seniors and those with chronic health problems or mental health conditions are at an increased risk. Homes without air conditioning can be much hotter than outdoor temperatures.

The Suffolk County Board  of Health said, “Excessive heat is the leading cause of preventable, weather-related deaths each year, particularly among the elderly. According to the CDC, heat causes more than 600 preventable deaths in the US yearly.”
