Hindus Celebrate Diwali, the Festival of Lights

Hindus from around the Huntington area gathered in Melville Monday for Diwali, a five-day celebration of their faith.

Diwali is celebrated by millions of Hindus, Sikhs and Jains across the world. The festival, which coincides with the Hindu New Year, marks new beginnings and the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness.

Food, prayer and music helped mark the religious festival.

The evening celebration at the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir drew the faithful and numerous visitors alike, including former Town of Huntington supervisor Frank Petrone, who was instrumental in helping the Hindu community build on the Melville site, and State Sen. James Gaughran.
