Hochul Sworn in as 57th Governor of New York

Kathy Hochul was sworn in as the 57th governor of New York State early Tuesday morning, the first woman to hold the position in the state.

The former lieutenant governor succeeded her fellow Democrat Andrew M. Cuomo, who resigned after multiple accusations of sex harassment.

Hochul has served in government on the local, county and national level. Elected to Congress in 2011, she was defeated for re-election by Chris Collins, who later resigned and pleaded guilty to insider trading. She was first elected as lieutenant governor in 2014 and re-elected in 2018.

She is expected to name her lieutenant governor later this week.

She will turn 63 on Friday.
