How To: Find Unclaimed Money in New York State

Every year, the state returns funds that have remained unclaimed, some times for years. The money could be from insurance settlements, court cases, forgotten bank accounts, utility deposits or other kinds of funds.

The state says that every day, it returns $1.5 million to those who file claims.

In Suffolk County,  $341,713,065 is awaiting claimants.  Businesses and organizations, estates, individuals and others are eligible to file claims, which can be done online.

The state comptroller’s website also lists a variety of other places to search for unclaimed funds, including the Internal Revenue Service, the Screen Actors Guild, New York State & Local Retirement System and U.S. Savings Bonds.
