Huntington Honors Its Veterans

Ceremonies in Greenlawn and at Huntington Town Hall Sunday paid respects to veterans who have served across the decades of American wars.

At Huntington Town Hall, Supervisor Chad Lupinacci, members of the Town Board, Suffolk legislators, religious leaders, as well as veterans groups and members of the public, participated in the ceremony.

“We are celebrating the service of our veterans on the Centennial of the World War I Armistice, which occurred at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the incessant boom of artillery abruptly went silent along the Western Front in France,” said Lupinacci. He noted that his office was contacted by the family of Walter Marshall, a service member from the Town of Huntington who served in World War I, whom the Town is in the process of adding his name to the World War I memorial plaque inside Town Hall, a request with authenticating paperwork recently reviewed and approved by the Veterans Advisory Board.

A service, organized and led by American Legion Post 1244, honored veterans at Greenlawn Memorial Park. The ceremony included a remembrance of veterans who have passed, as well as speeches and music. Among the participants was Marine Col. Jerry Weiss, a veteran of the wars in both Korea and Vietnam.

Both ceremonies included reminders that this year’s Veterans Day fell on the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.
