Huntington Honors Musician With Street Renaming

To the sounds of Big Band music, and the fond recollections of Pat DeRosa’s life, the town of Huntington  on Friday renamed West 19th Street in honor of the saxophonist who made his mark in the musical world.

DeRosa, who died last year at the age of 101, played with some of the all-time greats, including as a member of Glenn Miller’s Army Air Force band during World War II, and as a duet partner with the legendary John Coltrane.  In addition to his own performances, he taught music in both the Huntington and South Huntington school districts. In 2018,  the Guinness World Records  declared him the oldest professional saxophonist in the world still playing. In  2020,  he was inducted into the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame.

Councilwoman Theresa Mari emceed the ceremony before the unveiling of a street sign at the corner of 12th Avenue  declaring West 19th Street to be Pat  A. DeRosa Way. Council members Brooke Lupinacci and Dr. Dave Bennardo also participated, along with tax receiver Jillian Guthman.
