Huntington Hospital Installs Lockbox for Drug Disposal

Huntington Hospital has installed a secure box in its lobby for patients and visitors to safely dispose of unused prescription medications.

This box will be accessible to the public seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. The location is secured through a lock system and constantly monitored.

This is an opportunity for people to safely get rid of their unused prescriptions, particularly narcotics, which could otherwise be used for purposes apart from their original intent.

“Huntington Hospital is committed to doing all that it can to make an impact on the opioid epidemic that Long Island is facing,” said Nick Fitterman, MD, executive director of Huntington Hospital. “We hope our community members will help us in this effort by bringing their unused prescriptions and other medications to this secure location so they can be properly disposed of.”

In addition, Huntington Hospital utilizes Northwell Health’s Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) in its emergency room and in other departments to help identify patients who may have a substance use issue. SBIRT is also part of Northwell Health’s new Pathways to Recovery program that is being offered at all emergency departments and also includes medications for addiction treatment.
