Huntington Hospital Opens Wound Care Center

Huntington Hospital has opened a specialized wound care and hyperbaric medicine treatment center.

The new center provides outpatient care for patients with non-healing wounds, including millions of Americans with diabetes or circulatory problems who develop non-healing wounds that limit their activity or even threaten their lower extremities. These problems usually respond to the use of the latest advances in wound care therapy.

The center offers treatment for such problems as chronic skin wounds and ulcers, bedsores, vascular wounds, non-healing surgical wounds, diabetic foot ulcers, compromised skin grafts and other injuries.

“Millions of Americans experience at least one form of a non-healing wound annually and the incidence of these wounds is increasing each year,” said Luis Davila-Santini, MD, wound care center medical director. “Many of these individuals suffer from wounds that refuse to heal despite conventional treatment.”

The center’s team includes physicians, nurses and technicians with advanced training in wound care and hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which promotes healing by increasing the level of oxygen in the tissue and improving the white blood cells’ healing efficiency.

“We’re very pleased to be able to offer this type of treatment to patients who are living with open wounds that have not been successfully treated by surgical skin grafts, topical lotions or other alternative solutions,” said Nick Fitterman, MD, executive director of Huntington Hospital. “Offering these services in Huntington allows patients an option to heal close to home.”

Therapy is administered in one of two hyperbaric chambers in the facility that deliver 100 percent oxygen with increased atmospheric pressure, stimulating the entire body’s natural healing responses.
