Huntington Leadership Program Recognizes Three


Three Huntington residents active in projects benefiting the community were honored Monday night by Leadership Huntington.

Honored were Pilar Moya, graduate of distinction, Dolores Thompson, the lifetime achievement winner and Kevin Thorbourne, outstanding community trustee.

Moya, a personal finance expert,  is the executive director of Housing Help, Inc. She has spent the last several years helping community members with their understanding of personal finance, debt management, and housing options. Housing Help, a HUD-certified agency, provides housing counseling, financial literacy and debt counseling for community members in eastern and western Suffolk. Housing Help serves more than 1,200 clients per year.  Moya has received several awards for community service work including: Proclamation from Huntington Town Supervisor Chad A. Lupinacci for 2018 Women of Exceptional Achievement; Proclamation from County Legislator William R. Spencer in 2018; Proclamation from Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone; Citation from Assemblyman Steve Stern; and Employee Recognition Innovation Award by Family Service League. She has received various Certificates of Recognition and Proclamations from the Town of Huntington, Suffolk County and State Assembly.

Thompson founded and is president / CEO of the Huntington Station Enrichment Center, a community facility established for residents providing training in computer skills, entrepreneurship, English as a second language, job placement and youth and senior services. She has also served as the chairperson of the Dolan Family Health Center Advisory Board, long-time member of Leadership Huntington’s President’s Council, as well as a Corporate Trustee of the Huntington Hospital Board of Directors. Dolores retired as a manager of Operator Services from AT&T after 30 years of service. She has been recognized for her dedication and service to the Huntington community, Suffolk County, and New York State on numerous occasions. In 2010, she was honored locally with the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce’s Klaber Award, given to a citizen who has a record of distinguished and exceptional voluntary service to the community for fifteen years or more and has held key leadership positions with diverse town-wide organizations. Suffolk County inducted her into its 2011 Woman’s Hall of Fame, and the Urban League of Long Island honored her with their 2011 Legacy Award.

Thorbourne  works to give opportunities to kids of all ages to grow and become the best they can be. He holds community and beach clean-up days, food drives, food pantry help, backpack filling programs, Tri-CYA programs, homeless shelter repairs, and holds a recognition banquet for these students each year where he presents them with scholarships. In addition to his commitment to volunteer his time and energy, he holds the position of director of minority affairs at the Town of Huntington.  He is a member of the Melville Lions Club, the NAACP, and Board
Member of Whitman Cooperative. He has and continues to coach teams such as football, basketball and track at Huntington High School.
