The Huntington school board meets Monday night for official approval of the district’s plan to reopen in September.
The district submitted the complex plan to the state Education Department on Friday. Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo is expected to weigh in this week on all districts’ plans.
Superintendent James W. Polansky’s proposal favors a hybrid model, with students divided into cohorts based on the students’ last names, and most attending classes in-person on a limited basis, with the rest of the classes conducted remotely. High school students would start the year with just one in-person class a week, with an extra session once a month.
“The plan was formulated with the guiding principles of safety and flexibility at the forefront, as well
as with intent to maintain a comprehensive educational program for all students, regardless of the
learning model under which the program is operating at any given moment,” Polansky said. “The year will begin with students assigned to cohorts in each school, each cohort scheduled to report in person on a designated day or days each week and participate remotely on the others.”
In addition to dividing students into cohorts, plans call for increased in-per son attendance as the year goes on.
Plans depend on not only the governor’s approval but also on whether the Covid-19 epidemic recurs.
