Huntington to Host Boating Safety Course

The Town of Huntington is offering a New York State  Boating Safety certification course March 7-8.

The course is open to people 10 years old and up. To acquire certification, participants must attend the full eight hours and pass a test, which will be issued by the state Parks Department.

Register for the course, which will be held at Town Hall. Registrants for this event must be 10 years by the start of the class.

Those 18 years of age or older pay a $10 fee to New York State Parks. This is in addition to any course fees paid directly to the instructor. The parks department doesn’t charge those under 8 a fee but there may be a course fee charged by the instructor.

The course teaches basic boating skills and encourages common sense and courtesy to all who share the water. Topics covered include rules of the nautical road, required safety equipment, special boating related activities and other topics.

The course is named the Town of Huntington Victoria Gaines Boating Safety Program, in honor of one of the three children who died when a 34-foot cabin cruiser capsized in Oyster Bay in 2012.
