Huntington Vigil to Protest Separation of Children and Parents at Border

A vigil is scheduled for Thursday to protest the separation of children from parents seeking asylum or attempting to enter the country without documentation.

Speakers at the rally will include Dr. Steve Goldstein, president of the New York chapter 2 of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Rev. Marie Tatro, vicar for Community Justice Ministry, Episcopal Diocese of Long Island, Nikhil Goyal, author, activist and PhD candidate at Cambridge University and Dr. Harold Fernandez, a cardiologist and author of ‘Undocumented ‘ about his own experiences as an immigrant.

Speakers will be followed by a candlelight vigil and is part of a nationwide day of marches sponsored by Families Belong Together.

Families Belong Together opposes the recently implemented federal policy of splitting parents and children along the U.S. border with Mexico and at other ports of entry into the U.S.  “We protest the conditions in which these children are kept. We protest the irreversible trauma that has already been perpetrated on these children and their parents for the crime of seeking a better life.”

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has said that the policy is necessary.

The rally is set for Thursday at 7 p.m. at the northwest corner of Main Street and Park Avenue.
