Huntington YMCA Swimmers Honored

Huntington Councilwoman Joan Cergol, at the July 16 Town Board meeting, honored several members of the Huntington YMCA Bluefish swim team for their championship performances at the New York State YMCA swim meet.

Nine Huntington YMCA swimmers, competing in different events and in different age groups, took first place in a total of 12 events at the meet, held at the Nassau County Aquatic Center in Eisenhower Park on March 13 and 14. Two of the swimmers set new state meet records for the event, which attracted more than 500 swimmers from 32 YMCAs across New York State.

The Huntington YMCA champions were:

Erick Jung, Blake Rossi, Pierre Leroy and Evan Spagnoletti, who as a team won the 13- and 14-year-old Boy’s 200-yard freestyle relay, nosing out the Flushing YMCA by 0.43 seconds.

Lia Edlin-Miller, who took first place in the 11- and 12-year-old Girls’ 100-yard freestyle, with a time of 58.20 seconds.

Sierra Healy, competing in the 11-and12-year-old Girls Division, She won the 50-yard breast stroke and the 200-yard individual medley.

Julienne Saliou, who competed in the 13-and-14-year-ld Girls Division and won the 100-yard back stroke and the 100-yard butterfly.

Two swimmers each won three events and set a state meet record:

Aaron Mendoza competed in the 11-and-12-year-old Boys’ division. He took first place in the 200-yard individual medley, the 50-yard butterfly and, with a time of 26.73 seconds, broke the record for the 50-yard back stroke.

Kathryn Montefusco competed in the 13- and 14-year-old Girls’ Division. She won the 50-yard freestyle, the 100-yard breast stroke and, with a time of two minutes, 8.71 seconds, broke the record for the 200-yard individual medley.

“Congratulations to you and to aquatics director Kelly Smith and all of the people involved in training and coaching the Huntington YMCA Bluefish swim team,” Cergol said in presenting the swimmers with proclamations signed by the Town Board. “We are very proud of you and hope you keep on swimming and keep on winning.”
