HWCLI Hosts Schumer for Virtual Talk on Aid Package

Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer virtually joined the Health & Welfare Council of Long Island to break down the CARES Act, how it impacts the region and the hundreds of nonprofits affected by the global pandemic.

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, Congress passed the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, a $2 trillion economic relief package to assist workers, families and small businesses.

On April 24, HWCLI President and CEO Rebecca Sanin moderated the virtual talk where  Schumer addressed questions and concerns regarding Long Island’s present crisis and future recovery.

“Voluntary service organizations were a critical lifeline to Long Islanders after Superstorm Sandy and now they are playing an even bigger role as we fight to protect those who are most vulnerable to the health and economic impacts of Coronavirus,” Schumer said.  “That’s why I fought tooth and nail to include nonprofits in SBA’s economic disaster and paycheck protection programs and will continue to demand access for the nonprofit community to all federal relief programs so they can continue to fill the gaps between government and critical services.”

The Huntington Station nonprofit has been coordinating a disaster planning and response coalition of government, nonprofit and private sector partners who collaboratively address disasters on Long Island.

The Long Island Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster was formed by HWCLI after the September 11 attacks and has been working for almost two decades as an umbrella structure for disaster planning and recovery.
