Interfaith Gathering to Celebrate Life of Dr. King

Interfaith leaders and organizations will gather Jan. 17 for a virtual celebration of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and a discussion about healing racial divisions on Long Island.

The  program is an interfaith service that will focus this year on the response to the police killing of George Floyd in May that led to hundreds of protests around the world.

Speakers include the Rev. Dr. William Barber, leader of grassroots protests in North Carolina known as Moral Mondays; Dr. Richard Koubek, chair of Abraham’s Table; Kaitlyn Pawlukojc, Society of Friends; David Pinkowitz, Temple Beth Torah; Fr. William Brisotti, pastor emeritus, Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Wyandanch, Deacon Jean Dougherty, St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, Smithtown, and Tracey Edwards, Long Island Regional Director, NAACP.

It is sponsored by Abraham’s Table of Long Island, which includes Islamic Association of Long Island; Islamic Center of Long Island; Long Island Council of Churches; Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal RC Church, Wyandanch; Suffolk Board of Rabbis; Suffolk Y Jewish Community Center; St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, Smithtown; St. Thomas More RC Church, Hauppauge; Temple Beth El, Huntington, and the Turkish Cultural Center Long Island.
