Island Harvest to Honor HHH East Student

Island Harvest Food Bank will recognize Alec Armyn, a senior at Half Hollow Hills High School East, with its 2018 Student Ambassador Award in recognition of his hunger relief efforts in his community at the hunger-relief organization’s 25th annual Taste of the Harvest Celebration.

Longtime Island Harvest Food Bank supporter Bethpage Federal Credit Union is also being honored at this year’s event.

The Taste of the Harvest Celebration is a gourmet tasting event featuring food and desserts from more than 40 of Long Island’s top restaurants, caterers, country clubs and other fine eateries — all to help raise much-needed funds to enable Island Harvest Food Bank to continue to provide food and related support services to approximately 300,000 food-insecure Long Islanders.

The celebration is set for Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury.

Melville resident Alec Armyn has been participating in and organizaing food and toy drives since elementary school.

When he heard Randi Shubin Dresner of Island Harvest Food Bank talk about the more than 300,000 Long Islanders who face hunger every day, he  knew he had to step in and do his part.

As a Student Ambassador, Alec encourages his peers to understand the issue of hunger in our local communities and to help make a difference through direct action and involvement via awareness campaigns and food collection events.

In 2008, Bethpage Federal Credit Union began its annual Turkey Drive which quickly became the largest drive of its kind on Long Island collecting turkeys and food to support thousands of families.

Since its inception, the event has collected more than 30,000 turkeys and more than 109,000 pounds of nonperishable food to help Long Island families facing hardship in time for Thanksgiving and the December holidays.
