Jon L. Ten Haagen, a financial planner in Huntington who was active in community events and was an avid boater, died Wednesday morning. He was 76.
The Centerport resident had fallen ill in July.
He founded his firm, Ten Haagen Financial Services Inc., in Huntington in 1993.
“Jon Ten Haagen was a staple of the Huntington community for many years. Jon was a familiar face at various civic meetings and was an active member in a variety of organizations, most notably those related to the boating community,” said Huntington Town Supervisor Chad Lupinacci. “The Town of Huntington thanks Jon for his contributions and our collective thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.”
Robert Bontempi, vice chairman of the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce, said, “Jon was a leader in Huntington for as long as I can remember. Whether it was the boating community, on the board Huntington Chamber of Commerce or one of the many other organizations he was involved with, he always had a strong opinion, left an indelible mark and made a difference for the community. Few can say that. My family and I will miss Jon.”
In 2018, he was elected to the board of directors of the Northport Chamber of Commerce.
He was deeply involved in boater safety issues, including a push to require propeller guards on instructional boats use to teach children water safety. He had served in several capacities with the Greater Huntington Council of Yacht and Boating Clubs.
“Jon was a staple to all facets of the waterfront community! He was a deeply treasured friend of the Huntington Lighthouse Preservation Society. No matter what or when, he was always there for us in so many ways to help us grow and prosper. He will be forever missed!,” said Pam Setchell, president of the preservation society.
He was brother to Peter Ten Haagen and Christopher (Joyce) Ten Haagen, uncle of Anthony (Kelly) Ten Haagen and Kristy (Keith) Shapiro, and great-uncle of Sloan, Kingsley, Kieren, and Cameron.
A wake is scheduled for Sunday, 5-9 p.m., at the Nolan Funeral Home, 5 Laurel Ave., Northport, Cremation private. In lieu of flowers donations to the Huntington Townwide Fund in Jon’s memory would be appreciated.
