Juneteenth Scholarships, Ceremony Planned

Students who live in Huntington are eligible for scholarships that will be awarded in recognition of the Juneteenth holiday.

Awards of $500 each will go to eight students from schools located in Huntington. Winners will be recognized at a Juneteenth ceremony on June 22 at Manor Field Park.

Requirements include:

Seniors at Huntington high schools are eligible; applicants must write a paper describing their community service, educational or career goals, and an essay on what Juneteenth means to them.

They must also provide a CV, a copy of an acceptance letter from a college or trade school and two letters of recommendation (not from relatives).

Applications are due by June 1. See the flyer for all details.

Juneteenth is a federal holiday that marks the date, June 19, 1895, when the Union army enforced the Emancipation Proclamation on enslaved people who were still in captivity in Texas.
