Keeping Count of Horseshoe Crabs

Volunteers are counting horseshoe crabs at Crab Meadow Beach and Centerport Yacht Club and other sites during the annual tally conducted by the Cornell University Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County.

The data collected will be used by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation to assess the status of horseshoe crabs in New York’s Marine District, and to assist with the regional management and conservation of this species through the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission.

By participating in the survey, volunteers will be helping to collect data on spawning abundance, size, sex and tag returns around full and new moon events from May to July.

If you’re interested in helping.
