Kehoe Wants Cautious Approach to Hiring New Northport Administrator

Trustee Tom Kehoe said Friday that the village is interviewing candidates to replace the former administrator who was arrested, but may be moving too quickly to prevent mistakes in hiring.

Kehoe said, “The administrator is very important job and has a lot of responsibilities, to get work done properly and overseeing a lot of employees and expenditures. We need to replace that person but I don’t see what the rush is.”

As evidence of the need for better vetting of candidates, he pointed to Timothy Brojer, the former Northport village administrator, who was arrested in September on charges that he stole a sliding-glass door, windows and Sheetrock from the village. Brojer later resigned, and is due back in court Nov. 21 to face felony charges of theft and corruption. Brojer was fired as administrator for the Village of Mastic Beach in 2014 and then as a part-time code enforcer in Mastic Beach in 2015 after he was already working as Northport’s administrator.  The village of Mastic Beach dissolved as a village at the end of 2017.

Noting the part-time roles of elected officials, he said, “The people in the key positions are even more important. We have to have someone of sterling character. I am suggesting we slow the whole process down, maybe leave it open a little while. “I don’t think we should be rushing to hire. And there has to be more accountability in the organization charter.”

He said trustees have interviewed three candidates so far for the administrator position.
