Labor Day Weekend Kicks Off Festivals, Fairs

Labor Day  is a salute to the American union movement but it is also the start of a busy season of fall festivals and other outdoor events.

Among the activities coming up this weekend are:

Huntington YMCA carnival

The annual carnival provides food, entertainment, music, games, rides and more, on the grounds of the Huntington Y at 60 Main St., Huntington.

Friday       6:00pm-10:00pm
Saturday  1:00pm-10:00pm
Sunday    1:00pm–10:00pm
Monday   1:00pm-7:00pm

Proceeds benefit the YMCA Scholarship Fund.

 

Greenlawn Fireman’s Fair

The fair kicks off Thursday with a parade, followed by three more days of music, rides, food, raffle and more. The fair is held on the fairgrounds behind the Greenlawn Fire Department on Boulevard Avenue.

 

Huntington Lighthouse Music Festival

Billed as the only music festival on top of a lighthouse, the music will go from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. Musicians will perform from the lighthouse, while vessels of all shapes and sizes gather in the water around the lighthouse for a fun day of music, swimming and food.

Food Festival in Deer Park

Nearby, the Famous Food Festival runs through the weekend at Tanger Outlets in Deer Park, featuring dishes from around the world, music, axe throwing, artists gallery, cooking demonstrations and more.

Sept. 18 Greenlawn Pickle Festival

The 41st annual pickle festival will run from 10 am to 4 pm at the John Gardiner Farm, 900 Park Ave., Huntington. Roasted corn, specialty pickles, Lollipop train rides, hay rides, corn maze, antique car display and more.

Sept. 25 Bald Eagles of Centerport Day

The town declared Sept.25 the Bald Eagles of Centerport Day to celebrate the pair of nesting birds who have produced 10 eaglets. The celebration is set for the Vanderbilt Museum’s Eagles Nest and have live rescue raptors, including a bald eagle, golden eagle, owls and more. An art photo gallery will be on display, and a movie about the eagles will play hourly. Raptor face painting, educational and entertainment, vendors, a raffle and be a part of the festivities.

Proceeds will support the organization Wildlife In Need Of Rescue and Rehabilitation.

Facebook page devoted to the eagles, and where hundreds of photos of the eagles have been posted, has nearly 20,000 fans.

 

Oct. 8-11 Long Island Fall Festival

The Long Island Fall Festival returns for the long Columbus Day weekend, with music, rides, games, vendors and more. The festival in Heckscher Park has the following schedule:

Friday, October 8,  5-10pm
Saturday and Sunday, October 9 & 10, 11am – 9pm
Monday, October 11, 11am – 5pm

Oct.10 Columbus Day Parade

Yankee legend Joe Pepitone will be one of the parade grand marshals as Italian-Americans honor their heritage with a parade through downtown Huntington. The Order Sons & Daughters of Italy in America sponsor the parade with Town Supervisor Chad Lupinacci, stepping off at noon from Park Avenue and Main Street, heading west on Main to the Christopher Columbus statue.
