Local libraries are hosting events Saturday as part of a community service initiative known as the Great Give Back 2018. The project was created by the Suffolk County Public Library Directors Association and the Suffolk Cooperative Library System. The goal is to provide patrons of Long Island libraries a chance to participate in meaningful, service-oriented experiences. Events are all Saturday unless otherwise noted.
Cold Spring Harbor Public Library
Families can drop in Saturday from 10 a.m.-noon to create photo frames for newly adopted pets of the Little Shelter of Huntington. Students Demand Action will be selling baked goods from 2-4 p.m. to support their Long Island chapter.Decorate mini pumpkins and create other fall decor items to benefit a local nursing home from 2-4:00 p.m. Teens in grades 7-12 will receive community service credit for their participation.
Commack Library Public Library
The library will have different stations set up for participants to create reusable tote bags for Island Harvest, Halloween bookmarks for home-bound patrons, and craft kits for Huntington Hospital. They will also be running a baby supply drive for Helping Hand Rescue Mission, food drive for Island Harvest, and will be collecting used eye glasses for the Lions Club. From 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
Elwood Public Library
From 9:30am-5:00pm. Come to the library to make cards for military members on active duty.
Half Hollow Hills Community Library
From 10:30-11:30 a.m., teens will gather at the Dix Hills branch to make sock buddies, which will be donated to military families through Operation Gratitude
Harborfields Public Library
Teens will gather to use a loom to create cozy caps for newborns at a local hospital. No knitting experience required. Earn 2 hours of community service. 10 am to noon.
Huntington Public Library
It’s all about the socks. The library is collecting new socks to give to people in homeless shelters and/or veteran homes. The socks can be for children or adults. There will be collection boxes in both of the library’s locations. From 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Patrons can also visit the Youth & Parent Services department to make craft packets for children in Huntington Hospital.
Northport-East Northport Public Library
This year’s Pet Fair will focus on volunteer opportunities, nature conservancy, and wildlife rescue. Come speak with and see what you can do to help. There will be live animals and hands-on activities for children, teens, and adults. Donations of pet food and supplies will be collected by Long Island Cares and distributed to local shelters and households. This is an event for the whole family, but no pets please.From 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Also, children grades K-5 are welcome at 10 a.m. to create goodie bags for local pet shelters. Northport library.
South Huntington Public Library
Youth in grades 6-12 are welcome to stop in between the hours of 11am to 3pm to write a letter thanking our military heroes for their service. One hour of community service for those who participate. No registration is required.
