LIPA Litigation on the Table at Two Meetings Wednesday

Both the Northport school board and the Town Board will be meeting Wednesday evening in executive sessions to discuss the LIPA litigation.

The town announced Monday that the board will convene at 5:15 p.m. to vote on whether to vote to go into an executive session to discuss the litigation. Similarly, the school board will meet at 5 p.m. to approve an executive session.

Executive sessions are closed to the public.

The long-running battle centers on how the Northport power plant is assessed for tax purposes. The Long Island Power Authority and National Grid first filed suit challenging the assessment in October 2010.

Since then, the case has been in court and under discussion in mediation efforts to reach a settlement that LIPA would agree to and that wouldn’t devastate the Northport school district through massive cuts to assessments.
