Group to Rally Against LIPA

Concerned Citizens Against LIPA plan to rally Sunday over the utility’s attempts to lower taxes it pays on its power plant in Northport.

The trial hearing a lawsuit resumes Monday between the Town of Huntington and the LIPA.

Opponents of LIPA say the lawsuit could drastically affect taxpayers, particularly those in the Northport-East Northport school district, which gets as much as $54 million from the $82 million LIPA payment.  The utility says the Northport plant’s taxes re too high, given its  decreased use and reduced life span.

Others say the utility agreed not to challenge taxes if municipalities agreed not to raise them.

The rally is scheduled for noon Sunday at the Village Park in Northport.
