The largest LGBT cultural event on Long Island comes to Huntington this week. The Annual Long Island Gay and Lesbian Film Festival (LIGLFF) returns to the Cinema Arts Centre Friday, Oct.12-Oct.14.
Selected independent LGBT filmmakers from around Long Island will showcase their talents on the big screen.
The Cinema Arts Centre has been showing LGBT themed films since the 1970s and has been hosting the LIGLFF since its inception 21 years ago, said Dylan Skolnick, CAC co-director. It comes to no surprise that this annual festival has gained popularity through the years. The event has grown from only two films shown on one day to eight films, musical performances, receptions and the opportunity to meet filmmakers over the course of three days.
Films that are shown have been selected by a committee of volunteers and these films cover a wide variety of issues relevant to the LGBT community. Such as Miseducation of Cameron Post, which won the 2018 U.S Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. This film tells the story of a teenage girl forced into a gay conversion therapy center by her conservative guardians. Balancing drama with understated humor, Cameron struggles with pain and loss, but also is learning to empower herself by gaining confidence in her own identity. See trailer below. All-access festival pass is $55 Cinema Arts members and $75 for the public.
