Mamajuana Cafe Taking on a New Look

Mamajuana Cafe, the Latin-themed restaurant renovating the former Dragon Gate space on East Jericho Turnpike, is altering the looks of the building ahead of its expected opening.

The many glass windows that fronted on Jericho and Depot Road are being replaced by faux windows to maintain a look carried over from other Mamajuana restaurants, owner Oscar Monegro told the Planning Board recently.

There’s no traditional Latin restaurant in the area,” Monegro told HuntingtonNow in 2018. “I’ve been living in Huntington for over 20 years and I go to a bodega on New York Avenue that has a steam table for Latino food. The neighborhood badly needs a Latino restaurant that provides authentic Hispanic recipes and dishes,”  says Monegro, who is from the Dominican Republic.

Monegro has other restaurants in Queens, the Bronx, Manhattan and New Jersey. The Huntington restaurant replaces the Dragon Gate, which shut down in August 2018.

Mamajuana is a Dominican drink that combines red wine, rum and honey, soaked with tree bark and herbs.
