Man Convicted in Killing of East Northport Father

A man accused of killing  an East Northport father who was visiting his son at Marist College was convicted Friday of second-degree murder.

The newspaper the Daily Freeman said that the jury found Roy Johnson guilty in the Oct.2, 2022, shooting death of Paul Kutz at Courtyard by Marriott in Poughkeepsie, Kutz had gone to visit his son during Family Weekend at the college.

The trial lasted about two weeks, and deliberations lasted about a day and a half, the paper said.

At the time, police reports said that Johnson and another homeless man who were staying at the hoel got into a dispute; Kutz, who was standing in the hotel lobby, was shot during the confrontation between the other two.

Johnson, who was 35 at the time of the killing, faces up to 40 years, the paper said. The sentencing date was not known. The second man, Devin Taylor, who was charged with  second-degree criminal possession of a weapon for carrying a loaded rifle with no serial number, pleaded guilty to one count of the gun charge in March, while also admitting to commtting another murder months earlier in Poughkeepsie, the paper said.

Kutz, a certified public accountant, was the father of three.
