Man Killed, 2 Others Critically Hurt in LIE Crash in Melville

A Hicksville man was killed late Monday night in a crash on the Long Island Expressway in Melville, Suffolk County police said. Two passengers in the crash were critically injured.

Josue Melendez-Florez, 19, was killed when an eastbound 2005 Honda Civic driven by Erick Alvarado  struck an eastbound 2020 Mazda SUV  at approximately 9:50 p.m.  Both vehicles left the roadway and crashed into the woods near Exit 49S.

Kevin Florez, 14, of Hicksville, a passenger  in the Honda, was taken Nassau University Medical Center in critical condition. Cristian Florez, 18, of Hicksville,  also a passenger in the Honda, was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital in critical condition.

A 2005 Honda Civic, driven by Erick Alvarado, was traveling eastbound on the LIE, near Exit 49S, when the vehicle struck an eastbound 2020 Mazda SUV, driven by Shadman Sami, at approximately 9:50 p.m.  Both vehicles left the roadway and crashed into the woods.

Alvarado, 18, of Hicksville, was transported to Plainview Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.  Shadman Sami, 24, of Jamaica, Queens,who was driving the Mazda, was taken to Huntington Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Both vehicles were impounded for safety inspections. Detectives are asking anyone with information on the crash to contact the Second Squad at 631-854-8252.
