Marathoner Starts Series to Support Veterans

Veterans, runners and political leaders came together Saturday in Huntington to support Eva Casale as she kicked off the first of seven marathons in seven days.

Backed by her employer, Suffolk Federal Credit Union, the dedicated marathoner created her 184-mile running tour to honor troops and veterans. She will run through several communities around Long Island, having added Nassau County to her itinerary this year. She and runners accompanying her made several stops at monuments, cemeteries and firehouses.

The kickoff run also honored Cpl. Christopher Scherer, an East Northport Marine who was killed in Iraq in 2007 and other Gold Star families in the area.

Since 2006, Eva Casale has run 60 full marathons and 38 ultramarathons, raising more than $250,000 for several organizations.  The series continues for the rest of the week.

Among the political leaders who came out for the start of the series were Huntington Town Board member Joan Cergol;  Suffolk County Legislator DuWayne Gregory and Babylon Town Board member Jacqueline A. Gordon, both of whom are veterans; Nassau County Executive Laura Curran,  The race began on Main Street in Huntington and followed routes through Huntington Station, Centerport, East Northport and Northport.
