Maureen Guthman, BET Executive, Dies at 60

Maureen Guthman, a senior executive at BET Networks, died Wednesday at the age of 60.

The Huntington native was a sister of town receiver of taxes Jillian Guthman.

She had served as senior vice president of content strategy since March 2015. She worked in media since getting her start as an intern at Viacom, before rising to executive roles at MTV and New York One and then BET.

She was a graduate of Hunter College. An obituary posted by the college, said, “A leader in the industry and a mentor to many, Maureen was the recipient of countless awards in the entertainment world and was committed to seeing people of color, women, and LGBTQ+ people on camera.”

She was also described as, an accomplished musician, a lover of movies and books, an avid reader and an enthusiastic traveler.

“Andrea, although I was merely an acquaintance, it was clear to see, Maureen’s light shone brightly. Wishing you, your family and friends strength and peace during this very sad and difficult time,”  Kim Rahner said on  Legacy.com.

Another wrote, “Andrea and family and friends, I send my deepest sympathies .Maureen was such a joy to be around, a smile that could light the sky.” Cathy Reno Brouillet.

She is survived by her wife, Andrea Meyerson, her mother, Christine, her brother, Edward, sisters Karen (Donald), Joanne (Nodran), Jillian, and Jennifer (Greg), as well as 12 nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Dec. 12, at the Ascent Lounge, 10 Columbus Circle, 4th floor of the Deutsche Bank Center. The family asks that expressions of sympathy be donated to BARRK Animal Rescue (barrkli.org), Midori and Friends (midoriandfriends.org), or the GOG Foundation (gog.org/).
