Medical Cannabis Dispensary Opens

A medical cannabis dispensary officially opened its doors Wednesday morning in Huntington.

Remedy, which describes itself as “a mix of life long New York residents and cannabis advocates with years of successful experience in highly regulated industries and creating jobs across New  York,” said it is the first such dispensary in Huntington and Remedy’s first on Long Island.

It operates three other centers, in Brooklyn, the Mohawk Valley and the Hudson Valley.

Valley Agriceuticals, which manages Remedy dispensaries, was recently acquired by Cresco Labs, which operates in several states around the country and holds a cannabis business license granted  by the New York State Department of Health. Each license gives the operator the right to operate one cultivation facility and four dispensaries in New York.

Elizabeth Cramer Ernst, a nurse practitioner who owns Hamptons Medi Spa in Hampton Bays,  joined Jason Erkes, chief communications office for Cresco, in the ribbon cutting.

“Many people in our communities suffer needlessly from pain or can’t sleep or have appetite issues from any one of the conditions – this is a day for them to celebrate that there’s a new form of relief in Long Island,” Erkes said.

The store offers a variety of products and services, emphasizing wellness, including a selection of capsules, topical creams vape pens/cartridges, and oral tinctures. Nothing recent concerns about vaping products, the store has posted a sign about additives found in products found elsewhere that could pose a danger.

New York State said that patients may be eligible for medical marijuana use if diagnosed with one or more of the following severe debilitating or life-threatening conditions: cancer, HIV infection or AIDS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury with spasticity, epilepsy, inflammatory bowel disease, neuropathy, Huntington’s disease, post-traumatic stress disorder, chronic pain (as defined by 10 NYCRR §1004.2(a)(8)(xi)), pain that degrades health and functional capability as an alternative to opioid use or substance use disorder. The severe debilitating or life-threatening condition must also be accompanied by one or more of the following associated or complicating conditions: cachexia or wasting syndrome, severe or chronic pain, severe nausea, seizures, or severe or persistent muscle spasms, PTSD or opioid use disorder.”

The dispensary, featuring a bright, clean and open space, is at 277 Walt Whitman Road, previously occupied by a Fortunoff mattress store, which opened and closed in 2018.
