Melville Firefighter Honored

Suffolk County Legislators Susan A. Berland (D-Huntington, Babylon and Islip) and Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station)  recently presented a proclamation to Melville Assistant Fire Chief Jason Bernfeld for saving the life of a man after a car accident on the Northern State Parkway.

Bernfeld was on his way to work  March 12 when he happened upon the accident scene. He went to help a man whose car was upside down. Bernfeldwas able to pull the man out just before the car burst into flames. “I am extremely proud to honor the incredible bravery that Jason Bernfeld displayed on March 12th,” stated Legislator Susan A. Berland. “I have known Jason for some time and I can confidently say that the courage and willingness to help a stranger that he showed at this accident is who he is at his core.”

“As an instructor at the Suffolk County Fire Training School who helped train Chief Jason Bernfeld, I saw his dedication, passion and commitment to serving the community from the very beginning of his firefighting career,” said Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station). “I am not at all surprised by his continued displays of bravery every single day. In a difficult world, Chief Bernfeld is a shining example of all that is good and right.”
