Update: SPCA correcting age
Officers from the Suffolk County SPCA have charged a Melville man with keeping four Siberian Huskies outside for more than six hours while he wasn’t home during the recent heat wave.
Roy Gross, chief of the Suffolk SPCA said that an officer went to the home in Melville and found four Siberian Huskies penned in a fenced-off area of the yard.
Gross said that Michael I. Kaplow,47, told the SPCA officer that his dogs could handle the extreme temperatures and that he keeps them outside in all temperatures. A heat advisory issued by the National Weather Service was in effect during the time the dogs were outside and the temperature outside had exceeded 90 degrees.
Kaplow was charged with 2 counts of violating section 299-51 of the Suffolk County Code, which is an unclassified misdemeanor. He is due to appear in First District Court, Central Islip on Aug. 7.
