A virtual road race in honor of a fallen Marine from East Northport, a town ceremony, and parades around Huntington will mark Memorial Day weekend.
The Christopher G. Scherer I Ran the Grid race, in honor of Marine Cpl. Christopher G. Scherer who was killed in Iraq on July 21, 2007, raises funds for veterans’ causes. The races and related activities normally draw thousands of people but will virtual for the second year because of Covid-19 restrictions.
It is the first race in the Suffolk County veterans run series.
The public is invited to join Town officials in honoring fallen servicemen and women at Huntington Town Hall, Sunday, at 11AM , on Huntington Veterans Plaza, 100 Main St., Huntington, in commemoration of Memorial Day. In case of rain, ceremony attendance may be further limited for indoor observance.
Wreaths will be placed at the World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam, and Women’s Veteran Monuments and to honor troops in the Middle East. The ceremony will include live patriotic music, a rifle salute, Taps played on bugle, and Amazing Grace played on bagpipes, and refreshments to be served following the ceremony.
Road closure permits have been approved for several Memorial Day parades around Huntington.

- Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo Friday announced that New York State Police and local law enforcement statewide will increase patrols to combat drunk, impaired, and reckless driving throughout Memorial Day weekend. The enforcement period started Friday and runs through Tuesday. Police will operate sobriety checkpoints and increase patrols during this holiday weekend. Troopers will be using both marked State Police vehicles and Concealed Identity Traffic Enforcement vehicles as part of this crackdown in order to more easily identify motorists who are violating the law. CITE vehicles allow the Trooper to better observe driving violations.
- Town Hall and other government offices will be closed Monday. There will be no trash pickup Monday, but trash and recycling collection will remain on schedule the rest of the week.
- The Halesite Fire Department plans a short ceremony on Monday at 10 am to honor the lost.
