5th Annual Miles for Michael Race Adds Another Run

The fifth annual Miles for Michael race, sponsored by the South Huntington Educational Foundation and the school district, has expanded this year to include a 10k (6.2-mile) race.

The race, which features a  5k (3.1 miles) and a 1-mile kids fun run is scheduled for May 19, and starts and finishes at Walt Whitman High School, 310 West Hills Road, Huntington Station.

All proceeds benefit the Arts/Dance and Music programs of the South Huntington School District. The race is named in honor of  Michael Gallagher, who was born and raised in the South Huntington community, attended elementary and middle schools in the district and graduated from Walt Whitman High School in June 2012.  He died June 18, 2014, after a two-year battle with colon cancer.

The USATF-certified run follows roads throughout the Tree Streets area of Huntington Station, including the challenging Reservoir Road in the first mile. The second mile takes runners through neighborhoods that contain more curves and hills. The third and final mile is flat and gives runners an opportunity to enjoy the scenic route.

The race will be timed and managed by Start2 Finish Corporation.

John Andreoni, a Stimson Middle School student, will return as event DJ.
