Miles for Michael Runners Outpace the Rain

About 400 runners took on soggy weather Saturday to participate in the fifth annual Miles for Michael run.

The event, which features a  5k (3.1 miles) and a 1-mile kids run, added a 10k race this year. It is sponsored by the South Huntington Educational Foundation and the school district. All proceeds benefit the Arts/Dance and Music programs of the South Huntington School District.

The race is named in honor of  Michael Gallagher, who was born and raised in the South Huntington community, attended elementary and middle schools in the district and graduated from Walt Whitman High School in June 2012.  He died June 18, 2014, after a two-year battle with colon cancer.

Top finisher overall in the 5k race was Ryan Hansen, 13, of Melville, with a time of 18.37; top finisher of the 10k was Ray Downes, 47, of Huntington with a time of 43:09.
