Celebrations, Day of Service in Honor of Dr. King

Abraham’s Table will host its third annual Martin Luther King Jr. interfaith service and concert Sunday in Commack.

The event, “Righteous Anger: How Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Used  Love to Confront Justice” is scheduled for 6-9 p.m. at the Suffolk Y Jewish Community Center, 74 Hauppauge Road, Commack.

The program will include:

  • Interfaith scriptural readings on justice related to Dr. King’s call to take action against injustice.
  • A keynote address by Tracey Edwards, Long Island regional director of the NAACP, on the challenges posed by income inequality and racial segregation on Long Island;
  • Four choirs representing different cultural genres including Gospel, Judaic, Latino, and American folk.
  • Profiles of people whose anger prompted  challenges to injustice.

Admission is free, though attendees are encouraged to bring a healthy food donation for Long Island Cares/The Harry Chapin Food Bank.

On Monday, the Huntington chapter of the NAACP will celebrate its jubilee by honoring Dr. King at Bethel AME Church in Huntington.

The celebration is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Bethel AME Church in Huntington. Civil rights lawyer Frederick Brewington will speak at the celebration, which is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will include young people reading a few sentences from his speech, and performances by praise dancers.

The Microsoft store at Walt Whitman Shops will celebrate the holiday Sunday with by teaching youngsters how to create artwork inspired by Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech.  More information.

School districts and government offices are closed Monday in honor of Dr. King, the civil rights leader, who was born Jan. 15, 1929 and assassinated in 1968.
