Fourteen mosquito samples infected with West Nile virus have been found in Suffolk County, including two in Northport and one in Cold Spring Harbor.
The other 11 were found in IsIip (1), Brentwood (1), Bay Shore (2), Farmingville (1), Rocky Point (2), Stony Brook (1), West Babylon(1), and Lindenhurst(1).One was a Culex salinarius sample collected 8/19/20 from Bayshore (1) while the rest were Culex pipiens-restuans.
Suffolk County Health Commissioner Dr. Gregson Pigott said, “The confirmation of West Nile virus in mosquito samples indicates the presence of West Nile virus in the area,” said Dr. Pigott. “While there is no cause for undue concern, we advise residents to cooperate with us in our efforts to reduce exposure to West Nile virus and other mosquito-borne diseases.”
So far this season, Suffolk County has reported 60 mosquito samples that have tested positive for West Nile virus.
West Nile virus, first detected in birds and mosquito samples in Suffolk County in 1999 and each year thereafter, is transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito.
