‘Murph Challenge’ Deadline Approaching

The deadline is Friday to sign up for “the Murph Challenge,” honoring SEAL Lt. Michael Murphy, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2005.
Crossfit Bastion in Huntington is hosting the workout on May 28 as are other  gyms around the country.
Murphy, a Patchogue native, was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroics during battle in Afghanistan in 2005.
The workout challenge consists of:

1 mile run
100 Pull-ups
200 Push-ups
300 Squats
1 mile run

All funds raised from the event registration will be donated to the Lt. Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation, which awards individuals with scholarships each year. The following scholarships are awarded:

-Two are awarded to graduates of Murphy’s high school, Patchogue-Medford High School, one of which is awarded through the Suffolk Federal Credit Union.

-Another is awarded to an attendee of Lt. Murphy’s Alma Mater, Penn State.

-One is also awarded to a crew member of the USS MICHAEL MURPHY DDG112.

-Another scholarship is awarded through the Military Order of the Purple Heart to a Combat Wounded Veteran.

-Two are awarded to a cadet of the Lt. Michael Murphy US Naval Sea Cadet Corps based in Sayville and to a Gold Star child through the Special Operations Warrior Foundation.

In addition, Dan Murphy, the lieutenant’s father, said that there are a total of 28 scholarships, including one through Shoreham-Wading River High School in memory of Tom Cutinella, the 16 year old who died in a tragic football accident and who idolized Michael, as well as to the Nightstalkers 160th Special Operations Air Wing, and the Redwings team mates at their high school alma mater and the para-rescuemen through their foundation “That Others May Live.”
