New Huntington Animal Shelter Slated for Creek Road

Huntington will be building a new home for homeless or lost animals on Creek Road, following a vote last week by the Town Board.

The new shelter will rise on a large empty lot next to the Crippen House and near the town sewer plant.

The Huntington Town Board vote authorized spending up to $7 million, with $500,000 paid for by grant funding from the New York State Companion Animal Capital Fund and $500,000 from the proceeds of bonds previously issued in 2014. The remaining $6,000,000 would be bonded.

A town spokeswoman said that  bonding must be done before construction can start, with the town expecting funding to be in place by August.  Jim Ahrens, P.E.,  the deputy director of Engineering Services, who has overseen the design of the new shelter, said  construction could start late spring/early summer 2022 and be completed a year from then.

Supervisor Chad Lupinacci said, “This cost-efficient state-of-the-art animal shelter facility will complement our shelter staff’s great record of behavioral rehabilitation, training, and adoption of our furry friends.”

The plans for the shelter are designe to provide ADA-accessible facilities recommended by the Huntington Animal Shelter staff. That includes 50 double-stall kennels with slide gates to house up to 100 dogs (72 in the adoption area and 28 in the isolation area for dogs with rehabilitation needs), a multi-purpose training room, outdoor dog run, specialized HVAC system with multiple-stage filtration to provide for isolation of various areas, medical room, canine bathing area, specially designed lighting enabling higher illumination for cleaning of kennels, and energy-efficient mechanical and electrical systems.

The town’s animal shelter is currently at 106 Deposit Road, East Northport.
