‘No Excuse’–State to Allow Weddings by Video

Huntington Town Clerk Andrew Raia has been performing some marriages remotely, keeping his distance in the parking lot of Town Hall while uniting couples.

Marriage ceremonies have been limited to a few categories of Huntington residents–healthcare workers, service members, and those needing to meet legal requirements such as insurance and immigration.

On Saturday, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo joked about how couples could no longer use Covid-19 as a reason to avoid getting married. “Video marriages,” Cuomo said. There’s now no excuse when the question comes up for marriage. No excuse. You can do it by Zoom,” he said,  saying he thought more people are getting divorced rather than married at this point. Instead, people will be able to apply remotely for licenses, and that town clerks will be able to use video to perform ceremonies.

Raia said he will be examining the video possibility to ensure all requirements can be met.
