Section of Northern State Closing for Weekend

Motorists should expect a full closure of the westbound Northern State Parkway this weekend between exit 40 (Route 110) and exit 38 (Sunnyside Boulevard).

The westbound parkway will be closed to all vehicular traffic beginning at 10 p.m. on Friday, until 5 a.m. on Sunday, May 5.  Traffic will be detoured off the parkway at exit 40 onto southbound Route 110 to the westbound Long Island Expressway (Interstate 495).  Traffic may return to Northern State Parkway either at Sunnyside Boulevard (LIE exit 46) or at Northern State Parkway (LIE exit 42).  Detour signs and electronic message signs have been posted in the area to direct and alert motorists.

Westbound access to the parkway will also be closed from Round Swamp Road.

Construction crews will be excavating at Round Swamp Road bridge for the installation of steel sheeting, replacing the backwalls of the bridge, and installing new bearings.  Steel plates will cover the excavations on both sides of the bridge during the day.

Also during this weekend, the eastbound left lane will be closed between exit 38 and exit 40 for guiderail installation near the Round Swamp Road bridge from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. on the nights of Friday and Sunday.

This is part of a $9.5 million project announced last spring to enhance safety and longevity on three of Long Island’s bridge to ensure that they remain in a state of good repair for the next 15 to 20 years.

The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) appreciates the patience and cooperation of motorists and the local community while this project is undertaken.

As with most road and bridge projects, work may be cancelled, postponed, or prolonged due to inclement weather.
