Overnight Closures on Northern State Starting Monday

Motorists should expect full closures of the Northern State Parkway beginning next week between exit 37A (Long Island Expressway) and exit 40 (Route 110).

The eastbound parkway will be closed to all vehicular traffic beginning at 11 p.m. and reopening at 6 a.m. the following morning.  Beginning on Monday, May 20, the westbound parkway will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning.  Closures will run Sunday nights to Thursday nights and generally alternate directions weekly after May 20.  Electronic variable message signs will carry updates with additional information.

These closures are expected to conclude in approximately three months.   No closures will take place the week of May 12 for the PGA Championship at Bethpage State Park and during the holiday weekends for Memorial Day and Independence Day. As with most road and bridge projects, work may be cancelled, postponed, or prolonged due to inclement weather.

During eastbound closures, traffic will be detoured off the parkway at Exit 37A onto the eastbound Long Island Expressway (Interstate 495) to Route 110 northbound (LIE exit 49N) returning to Northern State Parkway. During the westbound closures, traffic will be diverted off at exit 40 onto southbound Route 110 to westbound Long Island Expressway (Interstate 495) to Sunnyside Boulevard (LIE exit 46) northbound where drivers may reenter Northern State Parkway. Detour signs have been posted on the routes to direct motorists.

Construction crews at the Round Swamp Road bridge will be excavating and installing steel sheeting, replacing the backwalls of the bridge, and installing new bearings, part of a $9.5 million project to enhance safety and longevity on three Long Island’s bridges.
