Northport resident Phil Weber Jr. was honored last week for his commitment and dedication to serving his community.
Huntington Town Councilman Mark Cuthbertson presented him with a proclamation. Weber is a life-long third generation Northport resident who since 1966, has been a member of the Northport Board of Fire Commissioners, holding the title of the longest-serving fire commissioner in state History (53 years). He started March 1, 1966 and is serving his 11th fivey=ear term spanning the terms of eight Northport Village mayors and 26 Northport Fire Department chiefs.
In 1970, he and his wife, Nancy, founded the Northport Little League where he served as the president for many years. When they started the Northport Little League, they played on Northport’s school fields. He worked with Northport Village trustees and the community to develop Steers Park in Northport which he considers his proudest accomplishment. A plaque in the garden around the flagpole entitled “A League Was Born” recognizes the Webers’ work.
He was a three-sport athlete at Northport High School. He played football, basketball and baseball. He was a three-year varsity all –league point guard described as the deadliest corner shooting guard in school history. As the senior point guard on the Tigers basketball team, they won the 1955 League Championship.
He was the backup quarterback on the football team which won the league championship both years. On the baseball field, he was a 3 year varsity pitcher, leading the team to capture the Suffolk County title.
On Saturday, the Northport East Northport school district will recognize Phil for his athletic achievements by inducting him into the their athletic hall of fame.
